Hilton Lake Taupo King Guestroom and King Junior Suite – Picture Review

Comfortable rooms, with generous resort style facilities

A long-weekend trip with my wife and her family led us to Taupo in New Zealand’s North Island. We had planned weeks prior to stay the night so we could break up the long drive, and see more of the region.

This review includes information about the Hilton Honors loyalty program and associated benefits.

Hotel status benefits

At the time of booking, I leveraged my Hilton Honors Diamond status that I had acquired through a status match in 2016.

Requesting to match your membership status with another loyalty program is straightforward. Here is our guide to status matching with Hilton Honors.

Research & Booking

The Hilton Taupo is ranked #21 of 68 properties within the area on TripAdvisor. Located a short five-minute drive from the centre of Taupo, the Hilton is close to some of the region’s most notable attractions, include the lake itself, and Huka Falls.

At the time of booking, a night in the King Guestroom cost just over NZ$300. I chose to redeem 50,000 Hilton Honors points for the stay. I booked a Junior Suite for my in-laws and brother-in-law which cost NZ$460, after a $120 cashback thanks to Amex Offers.

No upgrade was offered for either room at time of check-in as the hotel was fully booked out.

The room: King Guestroom

While the room is described as only 30 sq. m in size, which would be on the smaller end of the scale for a resort-style hotel, it felt quite roomy and not at all cramped.

Fitted with a king-sized bed, two chairs and table, and 32-inch flat screen television, the room provides all the comforts you would expect from the Hilton brand. The lack of a desk was fine for our stay however this is something that others may miss if they work while on holiday.

The room is also equipped with the usual hotel essentials, including an ironing board, iron, kettle, and an assortment of teas and coffees and a fully-stocked fridge.

The bathroom features a walk-in shower and separate bath. Water pressure was strong throughout our stay, and temperature was good. The double basin vanity space is generous in size, with plenty of room to store any essentials on a longer stay.

Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries were on offer, which is a little fancier than the standard Peter Thomas Roth products available at most Hilton properties.

The room: King Junior Suite

The King Junior Suite has a separate living area, and two 32-inch flat screen televisions – one for the bed, the other for the couch

The suite includes a furnished terrace, with views towards the pool and gym facilities, and Thermal Valley.

The bathroom for the suite is much smaller than for the standard room, with only a single basin, and no separate bath.

The Hotel

Hilton Taupo has a modern ‘mountain resort’ aesthetic, complete with a historic heritage wing built in 1889, which contains meeting rooms and the hotel’s restaurant, Bistro Lago.

Rooms are in ‘wings’ complete with New Zealand-based placed names.

There is a full-size tennis court, with complimentary ball and racket hire.

The hotel offers bike hire, which is a nice way to explore the area.

We made good use of the hotel’s sauna, spa room, gym and outdoor pool. There is also a ski board drying room available for guest use.

The hotel offers free parking but be aware that you’ll have a steep walk up to get to the main building.

The flavoured water in the lobby is a nice feature.

The hotel offers a turndown service, with complimentary bottled water and chocolate.

Member benefits

If you have Honors status, you will be provided with a benefit list at check-in.

The welcome sheet suggests that you will receive one bottle of mineral water only, but you can easily use the Hilton app to request more. We requested extra water for both rooms.

The hotel offers complimentary drink vouchers to Honors Diamond members in the absence of an Executive Lounge. You can choose from a dedicated drink menu in the Bistro Lago bar. Non-alcoholic drinks can be taken back to your room if you prefer.

Gold and Diamond members will be offered complimentary breakfast at the hotel restaurant, Bistro Lago.

Continental options will be available for Gold members.

Whereas Diamond members will have access to the full buffet, including select made-to-order dishes.

The hotel was generous in extending the complimentary breakfast benefits to four of us, with a minor supplement charge for the fifth.

Summing up

The Hilton Taupo is a comfortable hotel in an amazing part of New Zealand, close to some amazing attractions. The hotel’s buffet breakfast offers simple but fulfilling western options, and the extra made-to-order options are a nice touch.

Of the main benefits of the hotel is its resort-style features, such as heated pool, spa, sauna, gym, and tennis court.

The hotel is also only a short five-minute drive from the centre of Taupo, close to a wide variety of restaurants and other food options.

Make sure to book a standard room if you prefer a larger bathroom with a bath and more vanity space.
