LOYALTY PROGRAMS: Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
STATUS: The transfer rate between Velocity and Krisflyer is set to increase by about 15% from January 2019 onwards. Read more here.

Each month, Singapore Airlines’ loyalty program KrisFlyer offers 30% off its usual full redemption prices for Business and Economy Class travel during the following month to/from Singapore and a range of destinations.

In addition, the current promotion is offering half-price SilkAir redemptions between select destinations, not just for travel in September, but October too.

KrisFlyer miles are one of the more valuable mileage currencies for us in New Zealand and whilst Economy Class redemptions are offered on sale during these promotions, we usually focus on their Business (and First) Class redemptions as being ‘the deal’.

Some destinations have blackout dates during peak travel periods.

This deal makes sense for those with flexibility to travel at short notice and wanting to get good value from their KrisFlyer miles balance. A sweetener is that KrisFlyer does not add fuel surcharges to award tickets for travel on Singapore Airlines or SilkAir.

Do note that, unlike regular KrisFlyer redemptions, Spontaneous Escapes redemptions cannot be changed or refunded, so make sure you are firm in your travel plans before booking.

Offer details

Double the value of your KrisFlyer miles with a 50% redemption discount for SilkAir destinations this August! To enjoy the promotion, redeem your KrisFlyer miles online from now till 31 August 2018, for travel from 1 September to 31 October 2018 inclusive.

In addition, you can also enjoy a 30% redemption discount for selected destinations across the Singapore Airlines network when you redeem your KrisFlyer miles online from now till 31 August 2018, for travel from 1 September to 30 September 2018 inclusive.

For example, the cost of a one-way Business Class redemption between Wellington and Singapore drops from 58,000 to 40,600 KrisFlyer miles.

Taxes are about NZ$32 departing New Zealand—they are even less flying home.

There are specific flight numbers that are eligible for this promotion.

The discount will automatically be applied during the booking process.

If you add on another leg to another discounted destination, the promotion will apply to both sectors, i.e. you don’t have to make two separate bookings.

Note that there are blackout dates for some routes, so check the promotion page for more details.

Also note that under the terms and conditions of this promotion, ‘any change is strictly not permitted for bookings made under this promotion’, i.e. no cancellations and no date or route changes.

Summing up

KrisFlyer’s monthly Spontaneous Escapes promotion represents great value for those with flexibility with dates and KrisFlyer miles (or Velocity points) to burn. New Zealand airports pop up irregularly, but when they do, will usually include Wellington.
