Note: This programme has been discontinued, but we’ve kept this guide around for archival purposes.
JR/Vantage is the membership programme of JR/Duty Free, a duty free store located in Wellington and Christchurch, and with pick-up available before/after your flight in Auckland.
You can earn 1 Air New Zealand Airpoints Dollar for every $50 of eligible spend with JR/Vantage online or in-store.
You can also double-dip and earn points with the programme itself, and then redeem these for gift vouchers.
As one of the few duty free stores that offer a best price guarantee, you can count them on your list of potential retailers to purchase items from when travelling.
This guide explores how you can best take advantage of the programme when travelling.
Member Status and Points Earn/Redeem
There are three tiers of membership – Red, Gold and Diamond.
You can earn points on all purchases except Apple and Samsung products, and tobacco. The number of points you earn will increase once you become a Gold or Diamond member.
You need to spend $1,500 – $2,999 to become a Gold member, and $3,000 or more to become a Diamond member. This can be from spend on any products except tobacco.
The website says that you will retain this status for as long as you are a regular shopper. What they consider to be ‘regular’ is answered in their FAQ under ‘Tiers’ – at least one purchase of any value every 12 months.
Points will only expire if you do not make a purchase or points redemption within a 12 month period.
For every 4,500 points you earn, you can redeem points to the value of $20 in-store or online. This would require a general spend of between $320 – $450, depending on your membership level. This is a return of $0.04 – $0.06 cents per $1 spent.
Happen to be missing some points? Contact JR/Duty Free with proof of purchase to make a claim.
Earning Air New Zealand Airpoints Dollars
One benefit of the programme is that you can double dip and earn 1 APD for every $50 you spend (excluding tobacco) in addition to your points earn with JR/Vantage. This results in an overall return of $0.06 – $0.08 cents per $1 spent, an effective 6-8% discount on your duty-free purchases.
Paying by Credit Card?
JR/Duty Free accept all major credit cards.
If you’re trying to maximise your Airpoints Dollar earn, the American Express Airpoints Platinum will see you earn 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $59 spent.
Do you like flexibility with your points? The American Express Platinum Charge will see you earn the equivalent of 1 point per $1 spent with major programmes like Qantas Frequent Flyer, Velocity, Asia Miles and KrisFlyer.
Being a member of JR/Vantage gives you access to a few partner benefits, regardless of how much you spend with them on duty free.

Best Price Guarantee
JR/Duty Free are offering to beat competitor’s advertised pricing until the 20 June 2018.
If you find an identical item at a competitor’s store for a lower price, and that item is in stock with the competitor, they will match that price and beat it by 5%.
This applies to all products except those relating to tobacco.
The full terms and conditions for the offer can be found here, and we suggest you read through it in full, as there are some nuances associated with the guarantee.
- If the competitor is an online store, and the shipping costs of the competitor make the overall price more expensive than JR/Duty Free, then the guarantee will not apply.
- The guarantee includes member’s only promotions, which is highly unusual. If you can prove that you’re a member in a programme at another store, and the discount is associated with the membership, then they will still beat the price.
- If the stocked item online or at another store is bundled with a promotional offer (e.g. a gift), JR/Duty Free will honour the guarantee and give you the same gift. This is assuming that they have the same gift available!
- They won’t match with products sold in a city that is not part of your original, transit or final destination. Though they do match products sold online, so I am not quite sure how this matches up – I assume that the online store must be associated with a shop that is physically located in one of the cities you will be travelling through?
The JR/Vantage programme is free to join and gives you access to a range of partner benefits, regardless of how much you spend. This means that some could get value out of it without spending anything at all.
Remember to always do a price comparison though – JR/Duty Free have an online store, so there is no excuse to not do a bit of online research and price comparison before you head to the airport.
Their best price guarantee and offer to beat competitors by 5% may make shopping with them all the more worthwhile, especially as you can then earn Airpoints Dollars and JR/Vantage points with every purchase.
