LOYALTY PROGRAMS: Air New Zealand Airpoints

Air New Zealand have a partnership with Expedia that gives you the opportunity to earn Airpoints Dollars on every hotel stay, at thousands of hotels around the world.

You can currently earn double Airpoints Dollars on every hotel stay you book until 5 March.

Offer details

You’ll earn 2 Airpoints Dollar (APD) per $75 NZD spent until 5 March.

After this date, the earn rate will return to 1 APD per $75 spent.

Our take

The offer works out to be around a 2.7% rebate on the price of your stay.

This compares poorly to standard APD earn rates for partner hotels, e.g. with Millennium Hotels & Resorts, you’ll earn 1 APD per $15 spent, which is a ~6.7% rebate.

These rebate figures are based on 1 APD equalling $1 NZD on flight redemptions with Air New Zealand.

However some Star Alliance redemptions do offer better value.

Summing up

A direct booking with most major hotel chains will generally see you earn more Airpoints Dollars than booking via Expedia.

If your principal goal is to save money on your hotel booking, you’re also better off just taking advantage of a coupon offer through Expedia, or other sites like CheapTickets or Orbitz.

While Air New Zealand promote that there is a 10% member discount on select hotels, note that this is a standard Expedia Rewards offering.
