LOYALTY PROGRAMS: Air New Zealand Airpoints

Air New Zealand have a partnership with Expedia that gives you the opportunity to earn Airpoints Dollars on every hotel stay, at thousands of hotels around the world.

You can currently earn double Airpoints Dollars on every hotel stay you book until 22 May 2018.

Offer Details

You’ll earn 2 Airpoints Dollar (APD) per $75 NZD spent until 22 May 2018.

After 22 May, you’ll earn 1 APD per $75 spent.

Our take: is this a good deal?

The offer works out to be around a 2.6% rebate on the price of your stay. This compares poorly to standard APD earn rates for partner hotels, e.g. with Millenium Hotels & Resorts, you’ll earn 1 APD per $15 spent, which is a ~6.7% rebate.

I speak in terms of rebate because as you may know, 1 APD equals $1 NZD spent on flights with Air New Zealand.

The New Zealand Expedia site used to let you stack their Airpoints promotion with Expedia’s 12% off Mastercard offer, but this no longer works – which is a shame, because if paying with a card like the Westpac World Mastercard, you were for able to effectively save/earn back around 18% of your booking costs.

Now, you’ll save a lot more using coupons and booking through sites like CheapTickets or Orbitz, or even Expedia directly with this offer here for Mastercard cardholders. If you’re worried about having enough APD for your next trip, an Air New Zealand Airpoints Mastercard let you purchase any extra Airpoints Dollars you need to make a redemption, and by booking with some of these other sites, you’ll have the extra money to do so!

Price Guarantee

Price Guarantee

The Air New Zealand Expedia website offer a price guarantee. If you find a cheaper hotel online until 48 hours prior to the travel date, they’ll match the lower price by refunding you the difference and give you a $50 NZD voucher to use on your next booking if you check out using your Airpoints account (see full terms and conditions).

Conclusion

This site used to present a great offer for Kiwis who had an Airpoints Dollars Mastercard with a high earn rate – however no longer.

With the much lower saving and Airpoints Dollars earn rate, you’ll be better off receiving an upfront cash discount on your hotel booking by booking through a website like CheapTickets or Orbitz – you can find all the latest coupon offers here. The latter frequently have a 15% coupon code offer available, and allow you to earn back an additional 5% rebate in ‘Orbucks’ on their mobile app, which can be spent on future stays booked through the site.

Even though you’ll incur a currency conversion charge with these sites, you’ll still come out ahead in terms of cash value.
