Maximise value tip: book with Cashrewards

Avis and Budget are program partners of Cashrewards, which gives you an opportunity to earn cashback on each rental car booking.

Clicking through to the Avis or Budget website from the Cashrewards landing page will yield you Airpoints Dollars and a discount, which is not available by going through the Air New Zealand booking portal.

While you’ll only earn 2 Airpoints Dollars per rental day instead of the 3 Airpoints Dollars you would earn by booking through Air New Zealand, the cashback should compensate for the difference, and some.

Car Hire Deals

Air New Zealand provide a helpful page where they list all their latest car hire promotions. I did find that the list wasn’t exhaustive however and the Avis and Budget websites list additional offers.

Book and pay with Airpoints Dollars

You can redeem Airpoints Dollars for car rental with Avis and Budget by booking through their dedicated online booking page. Make sure you login to your Airpoints account, and click on ‘pay with Airpoints Dollars’.

Price Match

To incentivise bookings through their own portal, Air New Zealand offer a ‘Lowest Price Guarantee’.

If, on the same day you book your car rental through the Air New Zealand website, you find a lower publicly available price directly from the New Zealand and Australia websites of Avis, Budget and Apex, they will match the rate and offer a free single upgrade.

To qualify for the price guarantee, the car hire booking must be identical in all regards, and all details must be visible on the screenshots provided. This includes same car group, dates, times, locations, inclusions, supplier and currency.

To claim the price guarantee, you will need to email screenshots of the lower price and your Avis or Budget booking confirmation within 24 hours of booking to [email protected].

I find it a bit odd that they have a ‘same day’ criteria for the price match and upgrade offer. You could just cancel without penalty (you don’t pay upfront) and rebook to take advantage of the guarantee – so you would need to calculate how much the ‘upgrade’ would be worth to you.

Additional Driver

Another incentive for booking direct is that Avis, Budget and Apex offer at all locations throughout New Zealand and Australia provide an additional driver at no additional cost.

Summing up

If Airpoints Dollars are your currency of choice, you’re in luck, as you can earn on car rentals with three New Zealand-based companies.

Make sure to maximise value by booking Avis or Budget car hire through Cashrewards where possible.
