Guide to earning Airpoints Dollars with Harvey Norman
Harvey Norman are the only electrical and homeware retailer in New Zealand that allow you to earn Airpoints Dollars directly on spend in-store or online – including at their clearance outlets.
This guide provides an overview of how you can earn, how much, and details of the best Airpoints credit card to use to maximise your return on spend.
How do I earn?
Easy – just show your physical or app-based Airpoints card in-store, or enter your membership number online when you check out.
Once you’re on the final check-out page, you’ll have the option to enter your Airpoints number
How much will I earn?
You can earn 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $200 you spend, either in-store or online.
Remember, you don’t need to spend $200 in one go to earn Airpoints Dollars – you’ll earn ‘part thereof’.
E.g. if you spend $100 in store, you’ll get half an Airpoints Dollar added to your Airpoints account.
Any points earned should hit your account within 14 working days.
Note that Airpoints Dollars cannot be earned:
- via the payment of any delivery or installation of goods transactions; or
- buying gift cards (but you will earn Airpoints when using them).
How does this compare to earning Fly Buys with Noel Leeming?
Harvey Norman and Noel Leeming are two of New Zealand’s largest electronics retailers, and they both offer an ability to earn points on spend.
You can earn 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $200 you spend at Harvey Norman.
This works out to be an effective 0.5% return on your spend, based on 1 Airpoints Dollar being equal to $1 NZD when spent on flights with Air New Zealand.
The standard Fly Buys earn rate at Noel Leeming falls short in comparison.
Fly Buys points have a value of ~16.6 cents each when used towards a helloworld flight redemption, which works out to be a much lower 0.33% return on your spend.
Thus, all things being equal, you’ll get better points value from spend with Harvey Norman. Though the occasional bonus point promotion could tilt the favour in the opposite direction.
Using a credit card to use to maximise points earn
Harvey Norman accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners with no transaction fees, which provides a good opportunity to double dip and earn points through card spend too.
The highest earning Airpoints card that you can use on purchases is the American Express Airpoints Platinum, where you’ll earn 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $59 spent.
Using this card will boost your effective return on spend with Harvey Norman to 2.19%.
You can also collect Airpoints Dollars when you use a Harvey Norman gift card to pay for qualifying items.
The increased range of Airpoints partners makes it easier for New Zealanders to earn points when making everyday purchases.
I found the ability to earn points with Harvey Norman a good offer to take advantage of when furnishing my new home – though remember that the cost of points can often be reflected in the price that you pay, so still be sure to compare prices and shop around to make sure you’re getting the best value out of your electrical and homeware purchases.
