Earning True Rewards dollars from spend with the ASB Visa Rewards
With the ASB Visa Rewards, there is no points cap on what you can earn.
You will earn 1 True Rewards dollar for every $150 spent on the card in NZ dollars, being an earn rate of 0.006 True Rewards dollars per dollar spent.
This is an effective 0.6% cashback on everyday spend, based on each True Rewards dollar being worth $1 when redeemed towards flights or credit at participating retailers.
What is True Rewards?
True Rewards is the ASB points programme.
True Rewards dollars are equal to $1 of flight credit when redeemed at House of Travel.
This is similar to Air New Zealand Airpoints programme, but with the added benefit of being able to redeem towards seats on any airline.
True Rewards dollars can also be redeemed like cash at partner stores like Mobil, Farmers, Hoyts, and Noel Leeming, among many others.
You could also:
- Credit your True Rewards dollars towards your ASB KiwiSaver
- Redeem for products via the True Rewards online store
- Get a gift card, including for the Flight Centre, and Millennium Hotels
- Top up your Vodafone Prepay
- Donate to one of many charities
ASB offer the chance to earn bonus True Rewards dollars when you use your ASB Visa Rewards at select retailers.
Currently, you can earn 2x True Rewards dollars every time you use your ASB Visa Rewards when you order online (or in store) from Città or the Fine Wine Delivery Co.
Visit this page to see where you can get bonus rewards.
But what about AA Smartfuel?
ASB now allow you to choose between earning True Rewards dollars or AA Smartfuel discounts on your everyday purchases.
We recommend that you stick with True Rewards for the following reasons:
- The effective cashback on spend is the same. E.g. if you spent $150 on this card, you would receive either $1 worth of True Rewards, or 2 cents off per litre up to 50 litres of fuel at BP/Caltex, which is still equal to a max of $1.
- True Rewards Dollars can already be redeemed in-store at BP.
- You can redeem your True Rewards Dollars at a range of partner stores, including on travel. AA Smartfuel discounts can only be redeemed on fuel at BP & Caltex.
- AA Smartfuel discounts expire at the end of the next calendar month after they are earned.
You will earn True Rewards dollars on all spend, except cash withdrawals, payments for cash-equivalents like money orders and gambling chips, and any business-related purchases.
There is no exclusion for government-related spend, so you should be able to pay taxes and other government fees and continue to earn True Rewards dollars.
Visa Travel Benefits
ASB Visa Rewards Card Members will have access to an assortment of other Visa offers + perks, including travel and dining experiences across the globe.
ASB Apple Pay and Google Pay support
ASB cards support Apple Pay, meaning you can use this card on your Apple smartphone for easier payments.
If you have an Android smartphone, you will have access to ASB Virtual. This is a digital version of your ASB card and is loaded in your ASB Mobile app.
Summing up: ASB Visa Rewards
The ASB Visa Rewards is a no-frills entry-level credit card that offers the ability to earn True Rewards dollars from everyday spend.
All things being equal, the True Rewards programme is competitive with Air New Zealand Airpoints, as the points are flexible and can be redeemed via House of Travel for seats on any airline.
You can also effectively use True Rewards dollars as a form of ‘cashback’ for spend at participating stores.
However, if you earn Airpoints Dollars from travel and other sources, True Rewards dollars may be less valuable than if you focused on earning points with only one programme.
