Need to make a minimum spend on a credit card for some bonus points? Here are some ideas

As you’d know if you’re a regular reader of this site, there are frequently offers on credit cards where signing up for a points-earning card comes with a very lucrative signup bonus.

These offers sometimes require you to spend a minimum amount on the card, within a certain time period, to trigger the bonus points. The idea here is to get you used to using the card to make up the spending target, in the hope that you’ll get in the habit of using the new card. Continue reading…

Air New Zealand airplane on tarmac

Air New Zealand’s Grabaseat has long been the go to place for Kiwis looking to grab a cheap domestic flight deal – but they also occasionally come out with some incredible international flight offers too.

Until 25th October Grabaseat have released a limited number of seat only fares on return flights from Auckland to Honolulu starting from only $537. Since May this year Air NZ now services the flight with one of its brand new 787-9 Dreamliners.

The marvellous & murky world of online points & miles brokers

The first rule about points and miles is that everyone always wants more.

The lust for continually acquiring miles has created a cottage industry in the grey market known as ‘mileage brokers’. These brokers have a simple proposition – buy miles from us at a low price, and save big by redeeming said miles for First and Business Class tickets. Arbitrage in its simplest form.

But who are these guys? How do they work? Is it legal? What happens if you use them? In late July, with a bit too much time on his hands, I decided to find out. Continue reading…

Update!: now including Hawaiian – Flight Deal – New Zealand to Los Angeles direct, Business Class return for $3,500!

Update! Hawaiian Airlines have now jumped into this sale with return business class fares between Auckland and Los Angeles via Honolulu for $3,520. Sale fares are available on selected days from now until late June 2017 including holiday periods, and as shown later can also be booked to include a stop in Honolulu for no extra.

This week has seen some great return airfare deals across multiple carriers advertised for flights to North America.

We’ve written about the multiple carriers advertising sub $1,000 return fares to US currently on the market, however here I’m focusing purely on the ground-breakingly low business class fares the airlines have been a little more discreet about, and are available for booking all the way out to the end of June 2017.

Spend $200 with American Express Travel and receive a $50 statement credit

American Express have released yet another cash back offer! This time there’s a $50 statement credit for spending $200 or more online at American Express Travel with a pre-registered Amex Card.

Well they do say good things come in threes – this is the third time I’ve written about an Amex NZ offer, Countdown $15 cash back, and CBD Restaurants $10 cash back, in a little over a week.

Hopefully this is just the start of more offers coming through for Amex in NZ.

My US status run – how I achieved Velocity Gold by heading to Aruba and back

A couple of months have passed now since I finished my first US Status Run. In the first post I was sitting in the Auckland Emperor Lounge explaining the trip to Aruba I was about to embark on and attempting to highlight my reasoning behind it.

With this piece I’ll firstly take a couple of steps back to explain the process of how I decided on my final destination and the calculations behind it. After that I’ll go over the events of the trip and review the resulting impact to my Virgin Australia Velocity status level.

Along the way I’ll also attempt to highlight how you can make the most of a planned trip to the US and maximise your status credit earn from any internal flights. Continue reading…

Deal Alert: Air NZ Pacific Islands on Sale until 22 February

Air NZ currently has their “Islands” flight sale running until midnight 22 February. I’m a little bit late getting this out but felt it was still worth noting for reference. Being the leading Airline of the Pacific, Air NZ has flights to most Pacific Island destinations with a range of product options and fare classes.

The main focus for me at Point Hacks is to bring you great opportunities for earning points/miles, status credits and identifying where you can get the best value for your collection (what we call the sweet spot). Airline sales can often provide a good chance to collect more of those points and status credits at a price less than you would otherwise pay.

So if you’re planning this year on jetting off to Fiji, Rarotonga or any one of the other Beautiful Pacific Island Neighbours this could be a good opportunity to secure a bargain ticket. There are direct flights departing Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch and you can connect onto those from any regional NZ airport that Air NZ services.
